The April 25, 1990, the crew of the US space shuttle Discovery placed the Hubble Space Telescope into a low orbit around the Earth. This space observatory was designed in the 1970s and built in the 1980s, in order to expand the vision of the solar system, galaxy and universe.

Shortly thereafter, the engineers noticed that the Hubble showed irregularities in the lens, so they had to send astronauts to repair mission. Solved the problem, in December 1993 the telescope began sending their first stunning images of the universe.

The telescope was named in honor of Edwin Hubble, one of the most important American astronomers of the twentieth century.

It is located 593 km above sea level, in a circular orbit around the earth whose period is approximately 96 minutes. It is cylindrical in shape and weighs about 11 tons.

Hubble's resolution is 10 times greater than that of ground-based observatories, through it numerous spatial phenomena, distant galaxies, black holes and gas clouds can be seen.
