    Pilate PONCIO.

    Story of Pilate PONCIO.

                                        Story of Pilate PONCIO.

Military probably born in Rome, according to the Bible, Pontius Pilate, known simply as "Pilate," was who condemned Jesus to die on the cross. Its origins are unknown, however it is known that he was named fifth governor of Judea by the emperor Tiberius (42 BC - 37), succeeding Valerius Gratus em 26 AD, point from which I had a only subordinate to the governor absolute power Caesarea. His relationship with the Jews was never quiet or friendly because of their abusive behavior and cruelty, represented through frequent detentions without trial and arbitrary executions.

However, its bad reputation is due to the way that investigated the accusations against Jesus. The verdadeiro reason for the complaint filed by priests against Jesus was the envy that produced them, and Pilate knew it. He also knew that if he released Jesus was going to bring problems. Pilate ended up putting his career ahead of conscience and justice.

He asked them to bring water and washed his hands saying "I am innocent of the blood of this subject." Although he actually believed that Jesus was innocent of the charges put to him, Pilate ordered to be scourged and allowed soldiers be laughed, insult him and spit (Matthew 27: 24-31). The famous phrase "wash their hands" comes from Pilate, depicted in this passage.

It is believed that Pilate used as even a leather tunic and metal breastplate. To appear before the public, wearing a white robe with purple rim. Probably, his hair was short and no beard.

Eusebius in his Ecclesiastical History, says that Pilate fell out of favor, next to the Roman emperor Caligula and committed suicide about 37 d. C. But then, no one knows for sure how it came about his death because according to the apocryphal Gospel "Acts of Pilate" (known as the Gospel of Nicodemus, probably written in the fourth century) responsibility for the condemnation of Jesus falls mainly about the Jews and the role of Pilate is minimized. Because of this writing, the Orthodox and Ethiopian Orthodox churches recognize the figure of Pilate, to the point of considering it "holy", along with his wife, Claudia Prócula.
