    A scientific study says that the Roman gladiators diet was rich in cereals and ruled virtually meat consumption.

    It is a complex forensic examination conducted on the remains of 22 gladiators who lived around the year 200 d. C., in the Roman city of Ephesus, the current territory of Turkey. Experts at the Medical University of Vienna (Austria) and the University of Bern (Switzerland) should thoroughly analyze the composition of each bone, to discover that the Roman circus fighters followed a strict vegetarian diet.

    After a fight to the death, or after each workout, gladiators drank infused with ashes of plants to recover, as determined by the analysis of the levels of strontium in bone tissue.
    "They consumed plant ash to fortify the body after exercise and to enhance the repair of damaged bones," said Fabian Kanz, one of the teachers of the department of forensic medicine at the University of Vienna.
